’Tis the season… to play a game: Our Editors' Favourite Games to Play Over Christmas

’Tis the season… to play a game!

Nothing says Christmas downtime like a bit of friendly competition! Whether your family is big into boardgames, tempted by trivia or ready to get silly with a game of ‘Who Farted?’, here editors Florence and Hannah pick their favourite games to play over Christmas.

The Jane Austen Game (Florence’s pick)

One of our more complex boardgames, The Jane Austen Game is great for friends and families who like a longer game to get stuck into! Whether you’re a Jane Austen megafan or simply a single man in possession of a good fortune, everyone will enjoy immersing themselves in the Regency marriage market as you play as one of Austen’s six heroines and decide whether to gamble for a good suitor or set out on your own as a Woman of Independent Mind!

I Saw It First (Florence’s pick)

I always recommend the I Saw It First series to people looking for a game that multiple generations can play together! It’s super simple to learn (just pull out a tile and race to be the first to spot that thing on the board) and it’s great fun seeing how kids are often much better at it than adults. With four different versions to choose from – jungle, ocean, Egypt and danger(ous animals) – you can fit the theme to your family!

Flip and Find: Pet Detectives (Florence’s pick)

Want to try something tactical but don’t have time for a big boardgame? Flip and Find: Pet Detectives is a great in-between game, perfect for kids and adults to play together. It only takes 15 minutes to play and the mechanism is simple, but the pop-out board and race-to-collect gameplay makes it satisfyingly competitive! We’ve an ongoing championship with this one in the LKP offices, with Hannah currently holding the crown!

Agatha Christie Trivia (Hannah’s pick)

My family have always loved an Agatha Christie mystery – whether it’s her novels, one of her short stories or a TV adaptation – so what better game for Christmas than the Agatha Christie Trivia deck? With 300 cunning multiple-choice questions, split into three levels of difficulty, we love to play a few rounds to bring some friendly competition to the Christmas dinner table!

Did You Fart? (Hannah’s pick)

No one is too old to giggle at a good fart joke! Enter, Did You Fart? – a hilarious new matching and memory game where players must match an adorable animal to their stinky farts. From chimpanzees who use farts to communicate with each other to manatees whose farts help them float, the booklet includes loads of great fart facts! It’s the simplest and silliest game that will generate hours of pure joy. Just remember to always blame it on the dog!

Legends of King Arthur (Hannah’s pick)

When we have a little more time over the Christmas holidays, my family and I love an immersive yet simple and addictive card game. Legends of King Arthur fits the bill here! Completing quests, blocking opponents and claiming all the glory makes for a fun-filled and engaging game, no matter whose turn it is. The beautiful illustrations make the deck a joy to play with, and the fascinating booklet filled with Arthurian facts adds yet another layer to the game.
