Murray Eiland's Oriental Rugs has long been recognized as the standard introduction to this subject, and has been described by the Architectural Digest as the most useful, well-researched, and up-to-date book of its type. For this edition, the text has been thoroughly revised following extensive first-hand research in the East by the original author, Murray L. Eiland Jr., and the co-author, Murray Eiland III. In addition, the authors now include rugs from India, China, Eastern Turkestan and Tibet to present an entirely comprehensive coverage of the subject. The book focuses on the 19th and 20th century weaving of the Middle and Far East. Traditional practices are described, along with such modern innovations as computer-aided design. The use of synthetic dyes and the recent revival of natural dyes are given a balanced appraisal. The book then covers the full range of oriental rugs by country and region, providing detailed information on the characteristics of each type, illustrated with colour plates of typical examples. As before, this book benefits greatly from the authors' personal knowledge of the region. Political changes have allowed them to conduct important fieldwork in Iran, the Caucasus, the Central Asian republics and Eastern Turkestan.
